Hey there fellow bird lover. So, you’re thinking about bringing a cockatiel into your life? That’s awesome! Once you have carefully consider the long term responsibility you are about to embark on and decided its for you, this is were the excitement begins. Let me share my personal journey and some tips I picked up along the way.
Why I Chose a Breeder Over a Pet Store
When I decided to get a cockatiel, I initially thought about heading to the local pet store. But after some research and chats with bird enthusiasts, I learned that birds from pet stores often come from large-scale breeding operations. These places might not always provide the best care, leading to potential health and behavioral issues. On the other hand, private breeders tend to raise their birds in more nurturing environments. they truly care about their birds, resulting in well-socialized and healthier pets. Plus, breeders are usually more than happy to offer ongoing support and answer any questions you might have. They do this because the are passionate about birds and there wellbeing.
Finding a Trustworthy Breeder
Finding the right breeder felt a bit daunting at first. I started by asking for recommendations from my local avian vet and joined a few online bird forums. Attending bird shows was also super helpful; it gave me the chance to meet breeders face-to-face and see their birds up close. Also you can do a quick google search to get started, A reputable breeder will have clean aviaries, provide a nutritious diet, and be transparent about their breeding practices. If they’re open to showing you around and answering your questions, that’s a great sign.
Questions I Asked My Breeder
Before making a commitment, I made sure to ask the breeder a bunch of questions:
Most breeders do not have each bird seen by a vet so that should not be a deal breaker. In that case make sure they look clean and healthy. These questions helped me feel confident that I was making the right choice.
Spotting a Healthy Cockatiel
When I first met my cockatiel, I looked for signs of good health:
Taking the time to observe these details ensured I was bringing home a healthy bird.
Hand-Fed vs. Parent-Raised: My Take
I learned that hand fed cockatiels are raised by humans and tend to be more tame and social. Parent-raised birds are brought up by their parents and might display more natural behaviors but could be a bit more reserved around humans. I opted for a hand-fed bird because I wanted a pet that was already comfortable with human interaction. but that’s not to say parent raised birds can’t be great. If the breeder has spent time working with them they will be just fine. Before you bring home your feathererd friend see if the breeder will do a little extra work with them. Especially it they are parent raised. Most breeders will. They might charge a little extra but in my opinion its worth it.
Bringing a cockatiel into my home has been such a rewarding experience. By doing my homework and choosing the right breeder, I found a feathered friend who’s become a beloved part of my family.
